Aster (White wood)
(Aster divaricatus) 

Often zigzag stem bears somewhat flat-topped clusters of white flower heads.
Flowers: heads to 1" (2.5 cm) wide, with 6-10 ray flowers and a center disk that turns bronzy-purple. Bracts under flower heads whitish with green tips.
Leaves: 2-7" (6-17.5 cm) long, smooth-stalked, heart-shaped, long-tapering, coarsely toothed.
Fruit: dry, seed-like, tipped with whitish bristles.
Height: 1-3' (30-90 cm).

Flower: July-October.

Habitat: Dry open woods.

Range: New England south to Georgia; west to Alabama; north to Tennessee and Ohio.
